At least 1,000 families were left homeless after a fire razed down the Bataan Shipping and Engineering Company (Baseco) compound in Tondo, Manila at around 10 p.m., Saturday.
The fire spread quickly because the houses inside the 52-hectare Baseco compound were made of light materials and were built too close to each other.

Some 2,000 families or 6,000 individuals were left homeless after a fire struck Paco, Manila last January 13.
The fire hit the four densely populated Barangays of 821, 822, 823 and 824 at Gomez and Canonigo streets.
The fire lasted from five thirty in the afternoon (5:30 PM) until eight in the evening (8:00 PM).

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has lowered the alert status of Mayon volcano to Alert Level 3 on Saturday after noting signs of decreased activity. More than 47,000 people living some seven to eight kilometres around Mayon were already allowed to return home. However, more than 2,000 people living in the 6-kilometer danger zone remain in the evacuation centers.

Typhoon Santi (Mirinae) lashed the capital and nearby provinces Saturday leaving 5,564 damaged houses and Php15.6 million worth infrastructural losses in Camarines Sur alone, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) report said.

The number of casualties from the floods and landslides brought by Typhoon Pepeng (Parma) has already reached 719 after more bodies were recovered, majority of which came from the landslide-hit areas of the Cordillera Region, and the flooded province of Pangasinan.

Tropical depression Pepeng (Parma) made a third landfall in northern Philippines Thursday, causing widespread flooding and landslides. Last weekend, Pepeng made landfall over Cagayan, then three days later, over Ilocos Norte.
