CDRC conducts Disaster Information System and Advocacy Training in Panay and Negros

CDRC, in partnership with Center for People’s Resources and Services (CPRS), Panay Center for Disaster Response (PCDR), Panday Bulig Inc., and Disaster Response Center (Direct), conducted a series of trainings on Disaster Information System and Advocacy in Iloilo, Panay Island and Bacolod City, Negros Occidental under the project: “Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation for Flood and Landslide Prone Communities.”

The project is managed by Singaporean humanitarian NGO Mercy Relief with the support of Singapore’s leading media company MediaCorp, and implemented by the Citizens’ Disaster Response Center together with its network of regional centers.

Last year’s Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng wrought death, havoc and dislocation to thousands of Filipinos in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

Realizing these catastrophe, Filipino-Australians in Qantas and Airports went into full gear mobilization to assist the flood victims.

One of the fund raising activities was holding a raffle. The Qantas Fil-Oz found an ally in Matt Goebel the Operations Manager, Ramp, Baggage and Fleet Presentation in Sydney International Terminal.

He immediately approved the First major prize of round trip airfare for two, plus accommodation in Cairns. The Fund Raising Committee composed of Terry Paranthoine, Marie Greenwood, Betty Read and Bernie Mallary approached Peter Dickson for the other minor prizes.

A total of A$2,025.00 was raised and was sent to Citizens’ Disaster Response Centre, a United Nations fully accredited Relief Agency.

Migrante International, the biggest organization of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) implemented the distribution of the relief goods consisting of rice and canned goods to hundreds of stricken families.

Migrante International Chairperson Garry Martinez, representing 136 organizations in 23 countries all over the world and fighting for the rights and welfare of OFWs and their families who was in Sydney for the Founding Assembly of Migrante Australia took time to express the gratitude of the Filipino flood victims for the invaluable assistance they received through the auspices of Qantas.

In Garry’s words, the flood victims were heartened to learn the assistance came from Qantas as this is the first time they received assistance directly. The Philippine government receives all foreign assistance.

CDRC, through the generous support of the “Unity Concert 2009: Rebuilding People’s Lives”, distributed school supplies to the children affected by Typhoon Ondoy. The Unity Concert was a benefit concert organized by Filipinos in Toronto, Canada last December 13, 2009. Proceeds of the concert went to CDRC for relief and rehabilitation projects.

CDRC’s culminating activity for the UNICEF-funded project: “Rebuilding Lives After Ondoy and Pepeng: A Contribution to Children’s Road to Recovery.” The 2010 Summer Art Camp was held at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani grounds, and was attended by children from 10 Ondoy-affected communities in Metro Manila.

CDRC in partnership with Alay Bayan Inc (ABI) distributed house repair materials consisting of GI sheets, lumber, plywood, cement and nails to families in Central Luzon most severely affected by typhoon Pepeng (international name: Parma).

The activity is part of the project “Disaster Relief for Ketsana and Parma Affected Families” funded by Caritas Switzerland, Caritas Austria and the Austrian Development Agency, and implemented by CDRC and 5 of its regional centers, which includes ABI (Alay Bayan Incorporated).

The project aims to alleviate the suffering of 5000 families affected by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng through the distribution of shelter/construction materials and non-food items (plastic sheets, blankets, sleeping mats, cooking and eating utensils) and provision of psychosocial services to those suffering from post traumatic stress.

CDRC and its regional partner, Ilocos Center for Research, Empowerment and Development conducted a relief delivery operation in the Ilocos Region for the communities most severely affected by Typhoons Ketsana (”Ondoy”) and Parma (”Pepeng”). Families received non-food packs containing plastic sheets, blankets, sleeping mats and kitchen utensils.
